printer won't talk to the computer

printer won't talk to the computer

I recently purchased a new computer. All my programs and data were transferred at the shop where I purchased it. Some kinks had to be worked out and all is well except when I try to print anything I get a message "windows cannot print due to problems with current printer set up" The technician struggled with it all day with remote log-in. Uninstalling and re-installing. Changing the cable just in case, and changing ports. I can choose the printer when asking the computer to print so it knows it is there. Help! Any ideas to try?

Well I would love to help, however, you do not provide the most important information. What is the model of the printer, what is the operating system of the computer and what type of cable is being used to connect the printer to the computer? Provide these and someone should be able to help you.

The printer is an HP Photosmart C3150 All in one. The cable is a USB port cable, is that what you are asking? The operating system is Windows XP home

Actually, I checked and it is Windows XP Professional.

Remove the printer driver and software from the computer and discnnect the cable of the printer from the computer. Now go to the link below and download whichever package you need (basic or full featured) and follow the install directions and see if the unit works after that. Good Luck.

Okay, the technician did that today, from that very site. He has remote access to my computer and I watched as he worked on my computer. He was surprised that it did not work afterwards.
I unplugged the printer and the computer was re-started as well.

I never like doing from a remote site. How long did it take him to download the driver and which one did he use. The other issue I have is the printer should work with no problems so I would think that something that was transferred had some effect on the registry. When I do a remake of a computer I only transfer data and reload all programs and applications from original install disks. If this is not what was done then you run the risk of the registry becoming corrupt. The tech may need to download the scrubber utility from hp that removes all remnents of the old driver so you truly get a fresh install.

about 15 minutes to download the driver. I have had the printer for many years and do not have the original install. I usually save all that type of thing. But wouldn't you know, the one I really need I can't find.
I will mention the scrubber when I take the computer in tomorrow. Thanks
