Hi cgordon51,

Review Message 90 for the solution to the HP Printer Assistant opening up in Notepad, and then follow the steps in the attached document.

In Windows 7, when I type 'regedit' in  'search programs and files' , one program is shown:'regedit', not a file.
When I click on that program, five folders under 'computer' are shown. Should I select select one of these, or should I export 'computer' as I have that option to export it and save as a new file.

Sorry to be so obtuse, but I want to be sure I do this correctly.

Hello, will this work for OJ Pro 8500A 910a?  If so can you please expand on the proceedure.  I can get to regedit but which file do I click to export.  Where do I export it to?  Not being comfortable with editing the registry any expansion on the proceedure would be most helpful.

The printer is connected to a pavillion Dv7-3085dx, wireless connection.

Thank you.

Hi Glosrfc & ezraea,

I am not sure why you don't see the accept solution button, but i have marked it as solved for you. Let me know if Message 90 is the correct one. Glad to hear the issue has been resolved. Have a wonderful day.

Hi ezraea,

The Accept as solution button should be right next to the other buttons. Refer to screenshot below. Have a wonderful day.

I don't see any "Accept as Solution" button so other readers of this thread will just have to accept my word that the issue has now been solved on a Win XP and IE8 platform.

Incidentally, I also clicked on your Kudos button for the HTA registry fix post but that didn't appear to have changed. So I'm afraid that, if you can't see any increase, you'll also have to take my word that, virtually at least, your kudos has been improved. So enjoy the warm fuzzy glow and thanks again.

This appears to be a step in the right direction

I applied this latest registry fix and then launched the Printer Assistant.

The small HTML window opened with the loading animation (and containing the words "default text"), and I still got the script error message 'UDC_Progress.CommandLine is null or not an object'.

I clicked on Yes to continue and the full HTML window opened. This time, there were no error messages referencing the various JSON files...instead there was a single window indicating that the contents of a cabinet were being extracted. Once this had completed, the Printer Assistant details appeared.

I'm pretty religious about not having any toolbars or other BHO's installed on my PC, so no Google Toolbar here - I even unchecked the option to install the Bing toolbar that came with the HP installation.

Update

I've since manually edited the HPSPProgress.hta file in my Programs\HP\HP Officejet 4620 series\Bin folder.
I changed the User Agent request in line 6 to read "X-UA-Compatible" rather than "X-UA-Compatibile"
I also amended line 69 to read "var split_array = UDC_Progress.commandLine.split("\"");" rather than
"var split_array = UDC_Progress.CommandLine.split("\"");"
.

These changes were made to ensure compatibility and strict coding for IE8's JSON engine.

You'll be pleased to know that, with these edits (and the HTA registry fix) the Printer Assistant now launches as expected:
1. A small HTML window appears with the words "Retrieving information from device..." and the circular animation.
2. The full HTML Printer Assistant window now appears with all of the relevant buttons and links.
3. There is now NO Internet Explorer script error message window...hurrah!

You might like to let the developers of the installation package know about the spelling errors in HPSPProgress.hta as they're present in the latest online version I was asked to install. I'm pretty sure the UA setting was also mispelt in the original installation setup on the supplied CD and, checking the Full_x86.cab file, I can see that it is.

Hope this is useful, and thanks for you persistence in getting a resolution to this issue. Now, all I'm waiting for is the correct UK power lead to arrive and I'll finally be able to give the printer a more thorough workout

Hi ezraea,

Ok, thank you for the update. I will be discussing this in a meeting tomorrow. Please be patient while I attempt to figure out what might be causing this issue. I am with you till we get this resolved.

If you don't mind I would like to see if you have the same issue when the printer is connected USB. Let me know what you find out?

Hi ezraea,

Open Devices and printers, and then double click on the printer. Also try opening the file HP Officejet 4620 series.exe from c:\Program Files\HP\HP Officejet 4620 series\Bin. Let me know what happens?

Adobe Air
Abobe Flash Player 10 Plugin
Abobe Flash Player 11 Active X
Adobe Reader X (10.1.4)

In addition to the problem of opening up the program the Eprint functions are not working (or installed?)

Hi ezraea,

Restart the computer, and if you still have the same issue then you can re-enable this feature.

Do you have any Adobe programs, and if so, what ones do you have?
