Hi, I have an hp officejet pro 8600 all in one printer. It won't take the paper to print and says the following error message:

pick motor stalled

I am at a loss and in need to print a research paper. Please help!
Thank you.

Here is how i fixed this problem. I saw where somebody mentioned to take off the second tray and that was my problem. There was a paper jam from the second tray being pinched by the first tray. It was like somebody pulled the first tray when they were printing from the second tray and then shoved the first tray back in place which jammed the paper. My solution was take the printer off from the second tray remove the first tray and remove the paper between the two. I also blew the paper dust off from the machine while i was in there which probably also will help in the long run to do occassionally. Give this a try before contacting HP and returnign the printer like I was about to do.

Initially, paper would not feed. I tried reloading several times and kept getting "out of paper" message. Then I started getting "pick motor stalled" message. How can I fix this? I NEED to use my printer!

You are absolutely correct.  Paper was jammed and crinkled at top of paper tray.  When I removed it and fixed the paper, the error message disappeared and copier worked properly.  Thanks for a "simple" solution!!

I experienced this problem back in March 2012, just 2 months after purchasing my 8600 Premium.  After several attempts with HP tech support, we were unable to resolve the problem.  I found I could still print by shfting my printing to tray 1, but that was only a tempory fix to allow me to print.  Tray 2 still didn't work.  HP replaced my machine, and the new one has been working fine (knock on wood) since March.  You may have to go this route as suggested by the HP note you received.  Good luck.

See the advice in my first post in this thread.

"FrancisN is right in suggesting a fimware update first.  You can find instruction on that from the link below.

If that doesn't work, follow the steps in this document to help clear up the problem.  If it's still giving you problems, try the workaround of removing the second paper tray.  If after all of that the printer still gives the error message, you will need to get the printer replaced.  You can contact HP tech support at 1-800-474-6836 in the US and Canada, international users click here.  If you are out of warranty, HP will have to charge you for support and any replacements.  If you are in warranty, the services should be covered by the warranty.  You can check your warranty here.
If I have solved your issue, please feel free to provide kudos and make sure you mark this thread as solution provided!"

That did the trick for me. After my printer indicated "Pick motor stalled", I contacted HP via their Web site. A tech answered that I had to reinitialize the printer (i.e. unplug it while on, replug it after a few minutes). Since that did not work, I wrote back to the tech, who never answered back, even after a friendly reminder that I was still waiting for another solution.

So after two weeks of not being able to use my printer, I see this post, and lo and behold, there was this piece of photo paper stuck behind the paper tray. Once removed, the printer worked just fine. So thank you so much for this explanation! And thanks HP for all your help (insert sarcasm here).

I work with HP and just finished a call about this exact issue.
During the call I managed to find a work around, I don't know if this will work for you but since you're waiting on a replacement I felt you may want to know about this.
The issue appears to be the 2nd paper tray, when I had my customer take the printer off of tray 2 and print using the main tray, the error went away and we were able to keep printing.
If your printer has a tray 2, try taking your printer off of the 2nd tray and see if it will print for you.
I just thought you may want to hear this information in case you need something printed while waiting for the replacement.

After 2 hours with tech support on the phone and no joy, HP is sending me another machine.  However, I did try switching default trays (tray 2 was the one that kept getting me the error message).  Tray 1 worked!  If you are in a bind and need to print, try that.  But there is obviously something going on with the motor on the 8600.  It is amazing that all of a sudden, this error is showing up on many machines (I bought mine in January of this year).  HP should get proactive and find out what is happening.  I was really starting to love my machine, but now I'm concerned that after I get the replacement, it could happen again if there is a systemic problem.  HP - ARE YOU READING THIS?

You not have put in the brick thing in the back it actually picks the paper up for printing from the storage area.
