My parents have the same printer and theres is stuffed as well. Bought at the same time. They may still have their spare cartridges (they have since bought another make) that I will try out with this printer first.
Thanks for helping. Will let you know when I get the cartridges.

Hi
In that case the cartridge sensors in the printer have failed and printer has to be sent to HP for repair to replace those sensors.

Hi Andy.
The prob still persisted :( But I did manage to clean the cartridges up. They are full. I had a spare and tried using that as well but no luck. I had the 2 original ones that came with the printer and then bought 1 more 74xl.
When I swap between the 2 b inks cartridges I see no difference in error message. The second cartridge was a genuine cartridge.
Thanks for helping. Is there anything else I can do.

Hi
Sorry for the delay.
Now you will have to buy new genuine  cartridge to confirm if its a printer issue or not.
Your best option is to buy genuine cartridge from a store where they take back open cartridges if they are defective. That way you can return them and save your money.
If error persists with new cartridge than it would be cheapest to buy a new printer if this one is more than 1 yr old and out of warranty.

Feel free to ask any question or concern you may have. I will be  glad to help you.

Hi
I am sorry but in that case the Print Head is present on the cartridge itself. The golden dots at the bottom of the cartridge is the print head.
Please clean it using some moist cloth. Also clean all other golden contacts at the side of the cartridge .. and on printer
Now insert print head and cartridges and see if error  goes away.
If not, then you will have to buy new genuine  cartridge to confirm if its a printer issue or not.

"Please remove all cartridges and print head. Using a moist cloth clean the golden contacts on print head as well as printer. DO NOT touch nozzle of cartridge. Dont insert the cartridge yet."
When you mean clean the print head are you talking about the cartridge bottom. If so Clean all the golden little dots and the bottom of the cartridge where you can see little thin copper connecter lines.
How do you remove a print head. I have removed the cartridges already.
Also just another thing is that when I only have 1 cartridge in the printer there are 2 images (pic of a cylinder with an eyedrop and a yellow warning sign)  to show the problem. However when I place the 2 cartridges in I have only 1 images that goes along with the message.

Hi
This Error signifies that the printer is not able to  recognize a compatible cartridge.
This can happen because of two  reasons :
1. Your cartridges are bad.
2. Your printer's  cartridge sensor / print head has gone bad.
Please remove all cartridges and print head.  Using a moist cloth clean the golden contacts on print head as well as  printer. DO NOT touch nozzle of cartridge. Dont insert the cartridge  yet.
Please do this :
1. Remove the power cable from  printer. Remove the USB cable that connects printer to computer (remove  it from printer as well as computer's usb port)
2. Press the printer  power button and keep pressed for 3 minutes then release
3. Now  plug in the power cable and usb cable (connect printer to computer) and  power on the printer.
Now insert print head and cartridges and see if error  goes away.
If not, then you will have to buy new genuine  cartridge to confirm if its a printer issue or not.

I replaced the cartridge around 6 months ago and got the problem maybe a few weeks after that. I tried to resolve it then with no avail and have left it be until now.
I think there was a paper jam at one point but I can't remember if this was the reason why I got the problem.
The printer is 18months old and I don't use it often.
I have already tried the following and followed the advice given by
http://www.techsupportforum.com/hardware-support/printer-support/295588-hp-c4280-printer-says-print-cartridges-not-detected-missing-2.html

5 - Press OK for semi-full reset, printer should shutdown. Wait for 30 secs before turning it back on using the power button and follow the prompts to set the language and the country. If this won't work, then you need to replace cartridges.
Thank you for such a quick response.
