Is there anyone else who recovers typewriter platens? I've used Ames Supply forever, just found out they shut their doors yesterday. Thanks.

Haven't needed any for some time, but I was using Technical Support Associates (TSA) of Chamblee, GA.

Seems one by one those long standing small dealers that supply that off the normal channel stuff are dropping. had done business with that company since early 90's, although lately very little. Sad to see them gone.

Sanding is just fine,I used to do that on most cleanings.  But rubber gets hard with age, and sanding the platen does not make it any softer.  If a platen gets really hard the machine will chop up the ribbon, cut holes in the paper on o's and put wear on the typebars.

To avoid recovering platens I have been sanding them
with 120 grit paper.  Of course they can't have
groves in them. It's saved a lot of money, and works

I used to get platens from West Coast Platen Co.
I looked on their web site and platens are still listed. You can check it out on the web.

Crap!  I can't believe it!  I've done business with them since 1974, and although I don't have a lot to send them anymore, I just had some IBM platens recovered a few months ago, and Paul said they were doing ok.  There was another oufit, I'll try to find my old phonebook, never used them because Ames was only 20  miles away.  They are probably gone too.  Don't give up. If you find someone please post it here, I'll keep looking and let you know if I find something.
