Looking to buy a printer for my Mom for Xmas...

She wants something fairly simple, just black and white (she already has a color printer to use for rare situations where she needs to do color prints) since she wants something that will be fairly inexpensive to replace cartridges and such.  Suggestions as to reliable models?

I'd have to agree, I picked up a business class samsung 2250 laser printer a little while ago, while it may be a bit much for normal home usersit's one of the best printers I've ever used.  The toner lasts for about 5,000 pages and can be had for about $100

You might also look @ the Samsung line...my 2 yr old 1430  has served me justice...

Thanks everyone, actually I was just looking around and decided a laser printer would probably be PERFECT.....I'll look into the one you suggested Griffinhart.

I'd go with a basic laser printer.  Does HP make cheap ones>?
aha--see Griffinhart's post above mine

My recommendation is the HP1012

I picked one up to replace my Venerable HP4L which died after 10 years of faithful service.
The new printer is FAST and has great quality printing.
Toner Carts go for around $50, but never dry up like ink and last over 2,000 pages.

don't buy lexmark.
Their printers are dirt cheap but they try to kill you with cartridge prices.
*refer to posts above about Canon*

Canon IP3000. The black cartridge yields many pages and is very inexpensive to replace--especially if you go the 3rd party route.

Go with Canon....prints look great and the cheap ink cartridges are worth it alone. I've got a S750 printer, and I can get 2 sets of the refill kits (8 total - 2 black and 2 each of the 3 color cartridges) for $10.
