HP LaserJet 2200D - Toner Problem

Ever since a friend loaded a new cartridge with the pull out carriage guard still in place (subsequently removed)the print quality has been problematic. Whilst the printed characters are perfectly crisp and clear the background has become a mass of faint black and ghostly reprinting of the original some 3 -4 inchs earlier on the page. It is just as if when printing excess ink is left on the drum and it repeats the image until it fades upon the second pass. The problem has lessened to a degree with the passage of time and regular usage, but has returned when I had cause to move the printer recently. All of which is OK for internal usage, but unacceptable for presentation to a third party. Any ideas or is it time to buy a new printer?

It sounds like you loaded a new expired cartridge in the printer. The drum wiper blade tends to fail with age and cause problems like you describe. You can simulate it by pulling back the shutter and turning the drum gear with your thumb. A good blade will clean all the residue toner off the surface.
