Epson Stylus Photo R200 not showing ink levels or paper type selection

Ever since I switched to Snow Leopard I have lost my ability to see ink levels or select my paper type. I can print, but there is not much control over the printing and I have no clue which color cartidge to replace. Snow Leopard is using Gutenprint V5.2.3 drivers for this but I notice it uses the same driver for Canon and a whole bunch of others so it is not specialized for this printer and thus that is why I can't see anything. When I select "supply levels" the message I get is "information not available".
I installed Rosetta and tried to use drivers from Epson site but the most recent Epson drivers are pre Snow Leopard.
What do you recommend? This is very frustrating!

Have you used the disclosure triangle to the right of the printer's name?

You can change paper sizes but not whether it is glossy photo paper or regular paper. My main problem is I very much need to change the ink cartridge but I can not see the levels. After I solve that I need to be able to determine if I can do photo or regular paper, and I need a way to clean the head. All these functions I can not do, but I was able to do it before.

You'll need to wait for Epson to release their drivers for this printer then, the Gutenprint drivers don't offer this ability for Epson printers.

Ughhh. I wonder if and when this will ever happen. The last time they updated the driver was about two years ago.

Thanks, but I tried it and when I launch the Epson Printer Utility 2 that comes from this download the utility does not show the printer in the Printer List window so you can't select the printer to do anything with the printer, I guess.

When I went under preferences panel for print and fax it still shows the Gutenprint v5.2.3 under the listing for kind, so it appears to be still using the default drivers. Do I need to delete that somehow in order to get the Epson driver loaded when I run the Epson install? Its weird but when I did the Epson install I got the message that software was installed successfully yet it is not the driver showing.

I was able to solve my problem by removing the Epson folder in Library/Printers and replacing it with the Leopard Epson folder.
I documented the files I checked and posted screen shots on this page.
The big question is... if the Epson Printer Utility from Leopard works in Snow Leopard why is it being replaced by a newer version that does not support my R200 Printer?

Thank you for your detailed explanation. I checked the folders and subfolders and understand what you are saying. Unfortunately I do not have Leopard installed so I do not know how to get to that folder. I have a computer at work, however, that has Leopard installed. I guess I can try to copy the Epson folder off of that computer and swap that one in. If my understanding is correct, that should work? They do not use the Epson SP R200 there, however. Would I need to bring drivers in to install there or does Apple have all the drivers in there in a library already?

I am going to bring my printer driver install disk to work, install the printer drivers for my Epson printer into that Leopard computer, and then copy the Epson folder and replace my Snow Leopard Epson folder with this one.

It sounds like you have installed the Gutenprint driver. This happens when your printer is attached to your MAC and powered on when Snow Leopard is installed.
To uninstall Gutenprint and install your Snow Leopard drivers, do the following:
1.Uninstall Gutenprint.
You can download the uninstaller at the following URL:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/gimp-print/files/Uninstaller - Mac OS X ONLY/1.2.6/gutenprint-uninstaller-1.2.6.dmg/download
Click on the file it downloads and uninstall Gutenprint.
2. Power off the printer.
3. Use your Apple DVD to reinstall the printer folder. The R200 driver is built in

According to the the Snow Leopard tech note that lists included and updated drivers (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3669), there isn't a built in driver for the R200. Is the tech note incorrect? Thanks.

I swapped the Show Leopard Epson Printer folder with the Leopard Epson Printer folder and there was no change. It still shows the Guttenburg drivers as before and gives me no utility control of the printer.
I will replace the Snow Leopard Epson Folder and try the uninstall proceedure next. Thanks for the help.... This is a pain in the butt.

Did you select the Epson printer driver in System Preferences?
