I have tried windows update, it starts to download the correct driver then when it tries to install the driver it stops and says there was an error installing driver. I try to use the trouble shooter but it says there's no solution. I downloaded drivers from the dell website but I get the same result. I tried a new usb cable. I searched on google and someone said to try the lexmark drivers but I still get the same result. I just installed the newest release of windows 7. My printer worked with the previous version of windows 7 HELP!

Perhaps installing lexmark drivers is causing the issue. Try this:
Turn off Lexmark print serviceIf the Lexmark print service is installed on your computer, turn off the LexBce Server service. To do this, follow these steps: [ol]Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Manage. Expand Services and Applications, and then click Services. In the details pane, right-click LexBce Server, and then click Properties. On the General tab in the Startup type list, click Disabled. Under Service status, click Stop, and then click OK. Right-click the Print Spooler service, and then click Start (if it is stopped). Exit Computer Management.[/ol]The problem with troubleshooting is that trouble shoots back.

I keep running intoo a print spooler error.I use task manager and open services and re-start the print spooler, every time I try to add a printer the same message pops up about the print spooler being off.I did every suggestion that people gave me but so far....still nothing.

nhroger,
Have the printer on and connected-Uninstall any related printer software from HP in the uninstall programs.
From control panel, go to the hardware and devices. If a printer is there uninstall/remove it.
Now try add a printer from there and manually select a device- Try the HP 512 and see if it gets the printer working. The problem with troubleshooting is that trouble shoots back.

I tried that. When I plug in the printer, you can hear the sound the computer makes when you plug in a usb, Then it starts to download the drivers from windows update, then it says the drivers were'nt installed because there was a problem. When I try to download the software from dell and use it in compatibility mode it tells me to connect it with the usb cable.I unplug it and try a different port (and you can hear the sound from the computer) but I get the same result every time. This printer worked with the first release of win 7 but when I installed the latest version a couple of weeks ago,the printer no longer worked.
Thank you for trying to help.

Uninstall any and printer related software from uninstall programs. Go the printers in control panel and remove the printer. Disconnect the usb cable. Restart the computer. After it is running, connect the usb cable with the printer power on.
If win 7 does not install it, try the Vista 32-bit drivers from Dell here. If you are running Win 7 64-bit, they have no drivers.
I have no other ideas. Any luck?

Thanks
I did that and the program finished installing. now I get an error message that the print spooler has stopped. I went to services and restarted the print spooler but as soon as I try the printer the spooler shuts off again. I set it the spooler to manual and re-tried but some how it keeps shutting off! When I go to device manager there is a (?) on the del 720 icon I tried to scan for hardware changes but still nothing. I have re-booted several times too just to see if that would change anything.I tried the compatibility mode from windows xp thru vista service pack 2. any other ideas?

Hi
Are the drivers you downloaded from the Dell website made for Windows 7?
If not, you can try installing this driver in Windows compatibility mode for the operating system they are made for.
Here is the step by step instructions.
HOW TO: Install a Hardware Device Driver using Compatibility Mode
