Brother 8890 Paper Jam

I bought a used printer and since the beginning there was an ADF paper jam issue. After I found where the problem was, a sensor, I just pulled it up and the printer was fine for some weeks. Now the sensor won't come back to its position, as if there was no spring. I pull it back up but as soon as I copy a paper in ADF it will go down and not come back up, making the printer think there is a paper jam.
Now the thing is, I pinpointed the issue, but what can I do about it?

Thanks for the advice. I already have the service manual but I have yet to find the information about how to open the ADF, and find the courage in me to think I won't mess up anything! :)
But you're right, that's what I should do.

Sounds like the spring came off the sensor , is missing, or the sensor is in a bind somehow.
Try a Google search for a service or repair manual which should show the sensor and how to remove\replace it. From there you can determine whether a spring is missing completely or if spring is out of alignment.
Before buying a new sensor check to see if the spring came off and is hiding somewhere inside printer.
